Artist- Gaea Cannaday :: Studio- Gaea Gaea Cannaday has enjoyed working with clay for over 18 years. Bead making evolved from a love of clay, jewelry and design. Inspiration comes from all around. Nature. Children. Life. Pendants, beads, buttons and charms are made by hand from high fired porcelain clay. Each piece starts life as a lump of clay. Pieces are formed by hand shaping, molding or pressing. A design is sculpted in clay and a mold is made. Many pressings can be made from this mold. Time is taken to clean and smooth edges, form holes or add metal loops. Each pendant, bead and button is carefully painted with glaze and then fired to over 2100 degrees F. Firing in a kiln may take up to 10 hours to get to full temperature and let the magic happen! The kiln then needs to slowly cool over the next 18 to 24 hours.
